Like the cuckoo, even her name has just three syllables—Ja-na-ki. “Yad yad ācarati śreṣṭhaḥ…”—she was an extraordinary singer whose life and artistry continue to inspire contemporary musicians. Her place and stature in Indian music remain truly irreplaceable.
For the Telugu people, Janakamma’s voice was a divine blessing bestowed by the Almighty without their having to perform any penance. There was no raga that did not flow effortlessly through her voice, and no emotion that she could not express with remarkable depth and perfection. She embodied simplicity, freedom from jealousy, an exemplary character, and a life that continues to inspire generations.
I fondly remember an occasion at the home of composer Sri Madhavapeddi Suresh, where she asked me to sing Ghantasala garu’s “Pushpa Vilapam.” She listened with great appreciation and warmly praised my rendition.
Another unforgettable memory is the occasion when she listened to my musical rendering of the Bhagavadgita at the recording theater. She appreciated it warmly and later graced the release function with her presence and blessings. Watch the memorable moment: Smt. S. Janaki Appreciates Dr. L.V. I can never forget the time she visited our home, thoroughly enjoyed the brinjal curry prepared by my wife, asked for additional servings more than once, relished the meal with heartfelt satisfaction, and warmly appreciated my wife’s cooking. Such simple and affectionate memories remain among the most precious moments of my life.
I was also blessed to share the stage with that legendary singer on numerous occasions, performing together and receiving the honor of being felicitated alongside her.
Another cherished memory is singing a duet with her for the Telugu film “Madhyataragati Mahabharatam”, with music composed by Sri Madhavapeddi Suresh.
Equally unforgettable is the privilege of having her render a song under my music direction for my album “Sri Sai Geetanjali”.
These are memories that I will cherish until my very last breath.
The glory of those who have mastered the divine art of music transcends countries, time, race and every worldly boundary. As the Sanskrit verse says, the fame of accomplished poets and artists is not subject to the fear of old age and death. Such greatness rises far above titles, awards and statues.
I also remain deeply grateful for the blessings Smt. S. Janaki showered upon me and my musical journey. Watch: Smt. S. Janaki’s blessings to Dr. L.V. Gangadhara Sastry — https://youtu.be/08biwPKrEWc
I pray to the Supreme Lord to bestow eternal peace and the highest spiritual abode upon that great singer, whose divine voice touched countless hearts.
“In the blue clouds… in the waves of the breeze… whenever your song is heard… you will live on in our hearts.”
